Source of Nakba: decision to divide Palestine Committee for a Secular, Democratic State
Sixty-seven years ago, on November 29, 1947, the United Nations' General Assembly decided on the division of Palestine into two states: a Jewish state and an Arab state.
This unfair decision which was supported by the then two great powers - the Soviet Union and the United States - eliminated the possibility for coexistence of Jews and Arabs in democratic Palestine, and caused the outbreak of civil war that became an operation of ethnic cleansing. Most Palestinians became refugees and their land was divided between the Zionist state and Abdullah's Kingdom of Transjordan.
The Palestinians never had any reason to accept the arbitrary decision to divide their homeland, and certainly not at the demand of the imperialists and Zionists to allocate more than half of the territory to the Jews, who were barely one-third of the residents of the country.
The great powers cynically exploited the shock that followed the murder of European Jews by the Nazi regime in Germany. They saw an opportunity for establishment of a Jewish state, totally isolated, that would be entirely dependent on them and know how to guard their interests. The price of this vicious cynicism was paid by the Palestinians.
US imperialism was not alone in its support of the Jewish state. The Stalinist regime in Moscow was the most vigorous supporter of the Zionist movement, supplying it with vast amounts of weapons, and training pilots in the 'Czech arms deal' (April 1948).
The Holocaust thus sealed the fate of the Palestinians – exile and loss of their homeland. The disaster of 1948, and crimes that accompany it today date back to the disastrous partition resolution to divide the country.
This ongoing slaughter can be stopped through the cancellation of the partition resolution! Replace the "Jewish state" with a secular democratic republic in every area of the country!
Only this can bring back the refugees! Only this can build a regime of full equality for the two parts of the population in Palestine!
